Department of Transport and Supply Chain Management
Celebrating 50 years of existence, success and achievements (1968-2018)
The Department of Transport Economics started as part of the Rand Afrikaans University in 1968 and changed its name to the Department of Transport and Logistics Management in 1997. After the merger between the Rand Afrikaans University and the Technikon Witwatersrand, the name changed to the Department of Transport and Supply Chain Management, with the purpose of being strategically positioned in academia and in the transport and supply chain industries.
Over the past 50 years the department has collaborated with tertiary institutions and industry partners in the development and offering of diplomas and undergraduate and postgraduate degrees for a number of industry programmes. The department signed memorandums of understanding with various international universities and universities across the country to strengthen and expand transportation studies and training programmes.
Memorandums of understanding were also signed to collaborate on research and teaching and to establish transport economics as a study field within other universities. Since 2007, the department has entered into an agreement to fund four annual Transport Forum Special Interest Groups, developed and published the Journal of Transport and Supply Chain Management and has signed a collaboration agreement with ITLS Sydney for the establishment of the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies (ITLS Africa).
The vision of the department is to provide a comprehensive range of world class education, training and research programmes for the domestic and international transport and supply chain community. The department is continuously seeking valuable and game-changing opportunities for the future. In celebration of this momentous occasion the department gives recognition to all internal experts, collaborative partners, staff members, students, alumni and industry role players who have contributed to its success over the past 50 years, and for paving an interesting and exciting new chapter for the next 50 years.
