Kenya’s leading communicat­ions company, Safaricom, is the best employer on the continent and the 67th-best employer in the world, according to Forbes business magazine. Safaricom has 6 130 staff members with an astonishin­g average of 27 years of service to the company.

The ranking is based on recommenda­tions from employees and comprises 500 public companies from 60 countries. Employees were asked to rate their employers and to rate the likelihood that they would recommend their companies to others.

Good offence

Ethiopia now has a female defence minister, rounding out a Cabinet in which half the posts are taken up by women. The country’s prime minister, Abiy Ahmed, appointed Aisha Mohammed to the position, making her the first woman ever to have the job. Since being elected prime minister, Abiy has sought a number of reforms, including a peace deal between Ethiopia and Eritrea, which ended a 20-year border conflict between the two nations.

Madagascar has qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in the island nation’s history. The country’s national football team, nicknamed Barea, made it through the qualifiers after they beat Equatorial Guinea 1-0 at home. The winning goal was scored by midfielder Njiva Rakotohari­malala at the end of the first half.
