Remembering Hospice stalwart Anila Sewlal

- Jade le Roux

The death of Msunduzi Hospice stalwart Anila Sewlal leaves a huge hole in the hearts of the organisation.

Sewlal had been a huge part of the Hospice fabric for many years, playing a pivotal role in the administration and fundraising. She left the insurance industry and joined Hospice as an administrator. Sewlal then went on to become income generation manager and was instrumental in building up Hospice’s fundraising.

“Hospice is indebted to Sewlal for her fundraising initiative. She dedicated so much of her time to fundraising for Hospice. She used her connections in the business world to network and fundraise for Hospice,” said Hospice Chairperson Piet Jugmohan.

After being medically boarded in 2014, Sewlal continued to serve Hospice as a volunteer right up until her death, playing an active role in Hospice’s craft team where her incredible creativity shone through.

“She didn’t want to leave. Hospice was in her blood. She even dragged her children and family into the organisation as volunteers. Hospice has truly benefitted from all her skills and we are so grateful for her. She left a legacy and a huge hole in our hearts,” Jugmohan said.

He added that over and above her exceptional organisation skills, she was an excellent team player, which, he said, was commendable.

“Sewlal will be deeply missed. Our prayers of courage and support go out to her family and friends during this difficult time. Sewlal's creativity was incredible and we are so thankful for the time and talent she afforded us as a Hospice volunteer,” the organisation said.
