MARITZBURG UNITED IS AN ASSET TO THE CITY OF CHOICE

-

Having a resident PSL team based in Pietermaritzburg has significant benefits to the city that we felt obliged in terms of our mandate to support in the form of a three year sponsorship programme. At face value the decision to support the ‘Team of Choice’ has received much criticism but we are confident we have taken the right decision.

Firstly there were other cities bidding to attract United to relocate. This would have had a major negative economic consequence. Not only would the multi million rand Harry Gwala Stadium run the risk of becoming a white elephant but the city’s tourism and hospitality sector would have been severely impacted.

Already the sector, which is a critical component of the city’s economy, has been left devastated by Covid-19. The loss of Maritzburg United would have had a direct impact on many such businesses which would lead to closure and job losses. Every Friday night when there are fixtures scheduled, the city comes alive as supporters and fans from far afield attend matches, book accommodation and support the hospitality sector. Bed and breakfast establishments throughout the city rely on the business derived from these matches.

When you take the full economic impact into consideration including the contribution made to informal traders, then the investment must be appreciated for the role it plays in supporting the city’s economy. Another important factor was the social cohesion benefits. Every Friday night, when there is a PSL fixture scheduled here, residents from all communities irrespective of racial and economic divides, gather at the stadium and support the team as one united city. Against the background of social unrest how could we as a city lose sight of the social cohesion benefits.

For our youth in particular, having a PSL team resident in our city has major benefits. It provides a healthy, safe environment to be inspired by world class football.

We must not estimate the value and impact this has on the lives of our young people.

Through the city’s support of

Maritzburg United we have produced top rated footballers including one of the best known defenders. The city is rich in terms of football talent.

We are no longer the “Sleepy Hollow”.

The Team of Choice helps bring the city to life. We must stand firm in our resolve to back Maritzburg United and the City of Choice.
