Damaged traffic lights cause havoc in Msunduzi
Motorists travelling along Townbush Road and McCarthy Drive in Montrose put their lives at risk on a daily basis because of broken and non-functioning traffic lights.
Resident Paddy Bomford said traffic lights at the intersection of these busy roads have not been working for months.
“There is one traffic light that is lying on its side, coming in from the side of Grey’s Hospital. It has been left like that for five months. The other one was broken around mid-December last year,” said Bomford.
Bomford added that the problem has been reported to the municipality on numerous occasions, by residents as well as the Ward 25 councillor and the Ward 25 office, but no response has been forthcoming and frustration is now mounting.
“Absolutely nothing has been done. [It feels as if] the municipality does not care,” he said.
He added that the lack of working traffic lights at the busy intersection is posing a danger for motorists and pedestrians. “We just need them fixed without any more delays,” he implored.
Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson, Ntobeko Mkhize said the city was in the process of completing the repairs of the traffic lights.
“We are currently awaiting delivery of poles and other parts. We apologise to the members of the public for the delay,” said Mkhize.
“It remains a priority for the city to ensure that faulty traffic lights are addressed to ensure the safety of road users at all times. We urge road users to report any defective traffic signals to the call centre so that they can be attended to as promptly as possible,” said Mkhize.
