Mossel Bay back in hockey league

-

Mossel Bay’s newly-formed men’s hockey team took on Old Oaks 1 in George last Saturday.

On match day, 14 April, the opponents were a well-oiled machine displaying why they are the club champions. Team Mossel Bay took to the field for the first time in years with only one practice before the match. But what was lacked in practice, they made up for in enthusiasm.

The first half was played at the pace of the champions league, leaving team Mossel Bay feeling a little remote on the field momentarily.

Despite the pressure, the players were given the opportunity to find each other, getting to know each other’s signature skills and individual players’ personalities. The backs, including the keeper, were exposed to a bombardment of goal-scoring attempts. However, team Mossel Bay maintained a positive stance.

The second half was more calculated, with good communication, resulting in good field structure and players proving that the best skill in hockey is passing. The more senior players at the back made a noticeable difference by breaking down play, giving the young guns a respectful opportunity to get into position.

The opponents may remember the score and deservedly engrave it in their minds, however team Mossel Bay had a wealth of supporting spectators.

“It’s great to have Mossel Bay back in the league. Thanks to IKON Office Technology, Riann le Roux, Albert Wiffen from Delfino’s Mossel Bay, Mossel Bay Toyota, Stefan Janse van Vuuren and EPIEQ Sport Nutrition for supporting our team,” says Riaan Stroebel of the team. “A big shout out also to Milkwood Primary for the use of their sports field where practice takes place.”
