Accommodation for homeless

- Linda Sparg

Homes have been found for the homeless people who were being accommodated at the Shark Shack backpackers' rooms in Marsh Street during the lockdown.

Shark Shack manager Johann Binneman had been worried they would have nowhere to stay when the Shark Shack was allowed to reopen according to lockdown rules.

Binneman went to great personal lengths to see to the wellbeing of his temporary guests, assisting them with craft projects, seeing they had medical care and providing for their needs out of his own pocket.

Of the 36 homeless, 12 went to live with family members, one found a permanent job, others went to The Haven night shelter in Mossel Bay, one to a senior citizens' home and another to the Youth for Christ missionary branch in Cape Town.

Binneman said: "Thank you to the municipality for donations of electricity and thank you to all the sponsors who assisted."
