Soccer club teaches social responsibility
Wolveshampton Football Club was established in 2019.
Starting off with only 12 young players, it grew to 32 members. With most of the players still learners, the club currently has an U13 and U18 team.
"As we grew, I saw the need for a sponsorship and I began to do some marketing for sponsors," says coach Andries Meintjies. He scouted for sponsors and is grateful to those who supplied the club with soccer balls.
"Our biggest sponsorship and breakthrough came when I met Phillip Loader from England. He sponsored two full kits, 30 pairs of boots and practice equipment. Phillip was a big role player during the most difficult period of the lockdown."
Meintjies explains that Loader and his team from England made it possible to provide 150 food parcels to the most needy and also sponsored soup kitchens in Mossel Bay.
"We thank Phillip, his family and friends in England for their contribution. My aim for the youth football club is to teach boys about their role in the community.
"They need to understand the community needs them. The boys must know the importance of education, community service and self respect.
"Our boys should be reminded about the seriousness of crimes such as gender abuse and child abuse. As a sports organisation we need to work closely with our municipality, SAPS, Social Development, Correctional Services and churches to rebuild and uplift our youth, because they are the leaders of tomorrow."
Meintjies invites all boys to join the club. "With soccer, our mission is to uplift and protect our women, children and the elderly to contribute to a safer community."
