‘Noise from harbour a concern’

- Linda Sparg

A Mossel Bay resident has complained there is an incessant noise coming from the harbour, night and day.

The person complained that it constituted noise pollution and disturbance of the peace. The Mossel Bay Advertiser went to the resident's home and indeeed heard a noise coming from the harbour which sounded like a generator.

The resident was relieved when the noise ceased on Friday, 27 November at about 17:00. But it started again on Sunday, 29 November, again at about 17:00.

In response to the Advertiser's enquiry to the Mossel Bay Municipality, the municipality responded in a statement: "The municipality published a notice in the Advertiser on 20 November, to warn residents of the work being done at the harbour to construct a new sewer pump on the harbour wall.

"Work on the new sewer pump station and associated works have commenced opposite the Sea Gypsy restaurant. The construction entails deep excavations, earthworks and concrete work, which is hampered by the sea water that seeps in and continually needs to be pumped out. The water has to be continuously pumped out to allow the concrete work to be done. "Work will continue until Friday, 18 December and will resume on Monday, 4 January 2021. Mossel

Bay Municipality apologises for the inconvenience."

Seemingly the noise is caused by the constant pumping out of water.
