Writer’s poems on world map

- Cornelle Carstens

It's nearly a year since a global pandemic turned the world topsy-turvy.

Maybe it is not far fetched to consider that for the first time in world history, since people are confronted with the same challenges, they are also jointly battling against with the same emotions, such as anxiety, frustration, sadness and more.

How are people across the world dealing with Covid-19 and what have they learnt? Is mankind even coping with the new normal which has now replaced the so-called golden age before social distancing and wearing face masks?

A snapshot of this has been created in In the Midst, a COVID-19 Anthology, featuring the work of writers and artists from six continents. In the Midst, a COVID-19 Anthology features original art, photography, poems, essays, fiction and scripts that reflect a common humanity, regardless of age, ethnicity or location, in reaction to the

Coronavirus pandemic with seemingly no end in sight.

In the Midst was compiled by Inspiration for Writers Inc, based in New York.

Local writer, Sharon Brummer's work appears among the 100 selected entries. She contributed two poems, Fight not flight and Hold your loved ones tight.

"The poems I wrote were written with mixed emotions, such as confusion, frustration, sadness, but always from a point of hope and optimism," she explains. Brummer, who worked in the corporate world for 30 years, always loved writing. After retirement, she started writing productively and she is now a published author.

Her take on Covid-19 is that the restrictions, although she fully understands the reasoning behind them, left her frustrated.

"My husband and I enjoy entertaining, so the last few months have been quiet to say the least. Also, my children and sisters live in Australia. Not being able to travel has been very difficult. We really miss them."

Brummer's heart goes out to those who have lost someone to the virus.

"I’m relieved to hear that an immunisation against the virus will soon be available. Life will never be the same again. Online purchases and services are in our future. Working from home will evolve further, including many aspects of education."

In the Midst, a COVID-19 Anthology is available from Amazon.
