Progress with cameras
In the quest to ensure safety in Mossel Bay communities, the municipality partnered with the Dias Neighbourhood watch, the Da Gamaskop Community Policing Form (CPF), the police, local businesses and community members to raise funds to install three overview cameras and one license plate recognition (LPR) camera near the Oceans Hotel along Louis Fourie Road.
At the same time, high site equipment was negotiated and improved, which now also assists with the overview and LPR cameras to be installed by the Heiderand Neighbourhood watch.
The high site equipment was paid for by two neighbourhood watches. A security camera system was already installed in Da Nova in the last few weeks.
The LPR camera on Louis Fourie Road will be installed and discussions with a national management system company will enable alerts and responses as per the other LPR cameras in Mossel Bay by all law enforcers.
The completion of the Joint Operation Centre (JOC) is on track for 9 December and all overview and LPR cameras will be viewed and monitored from February 2022.
The greater Mossel Bay Community Safety Forum is working hard on various projects and to enable the installation of cameras in other hotspots.
This, however, is dependent also on community involvement and funding available and the establishment of various high sites.
These sites have been made available to the security network and private high sites may also soon be utilised to the community’s advantage. It will soon be announced what the next potential phase is. This week rural communities also indicated their desire to link four cameras to the control room.
The municipality noted in a statement: “We encourage the various neighbourhood watches to raise funds and make this desire possible as all infrastructure is owned and rolled out by the neighbourhood watches.
“We encourage communities to play an active role to assist in the rolling out of the security network. We thank all the partners instrumental in making the placement of cameras and other equipment in communities possible.”
