Festival of sailing

-

The Bart’s Bash sailing event, which was postponed last week due to adverse weather conditions, takes place this weekend.

The bash is tomorrow, Saturday 23 September.

Andrew “Bart” Simpson, was an English sailor who won a gold medal for Great Britain in the Star class in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

He was tragically struck down in his prime at only 37 years of age when the catamaran he was training on for the America’s Cup capsized.

Bart’s Bash is the world’s largest sailing event, run by sailing clubs all around the world on behalf of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation.

The event will take place from 13.00. For more information, contact

Elfie Holden (082 826 3825 or elfie@ skipperfoundation.co.za).

Sail Past

The annual Mossel Bay Sail Past also takes place tomorrow, Saturday 23 September, at 15:00. Local yachts take to the bay in a procession each year to celebrate the official start of the sailing season.

This usually makes for a beautiful spectacle, with all the colourful sails on show. Do not miss seeing this.

Another exciting sailing event, the Mossel Bay Race, takes place next week.

The Mossel Bay Race starts in Simon’s Town on 28 September and concludes in Mossel Bay on Sunday, 1 October.

The first Mossel Bay Race took place in 1955 and it is the first and only true ocean

race in South Africa over a 210 nautical mile stretch.

The Sport and Recreation Festival calendar is available at the Mossel Bay Municipality website (www.mosselbay.gov. za/news-display/a04a0827-332a-46e4-bba98674886adeda).
