Carpe Musicam! wows again

- Linda Sparg

The Carpe Musicam! Orchestra and Choir received a standing ovation after their concert in the Mossel Bay Town Hall on Sunday, 15 October.

A highlight of the programme was the fast-paced, up-tempo Vivaldiana. The sound of the triangle in this piece is particularly special.

The Classical Music Mash-up was a treat, with more than 40 snippets of all one's favourite classics rolled into one. Sometimes there are even three melodies running concurrently.

Lonely Shepherd was a delight, with Carpe Musicam! director and conductor Norman Carless playing a pan flute. This gave a particularly poignant, haunting sound.

The choir excelled with Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, especially with the high notes.

Pianist Elsabe Barkhuizen showed her impressive skill in Ode to Joy, a fast piece for the piano. She nailed it.

Final Countdown was thrilling, with a real build-up that raised the heartbeat.

Blended beautifully

The orchestra and choir sounds blended beautifully in Chorale and Rockout. One was not sure where the orchestra and choir started and ended, the sound was so harmonious. The tambourine was special and the drum kit solo at the end, marvellous. Drummer Kevi Levin excelled.

Once again, the choir truly rose to the occasion in You raise me up.

There was a good turnout in the town hall and there was loud applause after each piece on the programme.

It was an extremely enjoyable concert, with fresh, new material, which gave members of the audience a spring in their step, in tune with the season of spring.

Carpe Musicam! always delivers fresh, new sounds at each concert.

The next Carpe Musicam! concerts are at 19:00 on 15 December in the Outeniqua High School Hall, George, and at 18:00 on 17 December in the Mossel Bay Town Hall. Book early.
