50 teams in Mayoral Cup
The Mayoral Cup was hosted last weekend as part of the 10th Mossel Bay Sports and Recreation Festival.
This year, for the first time, soccer was included in the tournament, which usually only features rugby and netball.
From 13 to 15 October, the tournament was the place to be, not only because of the sporting action but also because there was definitely much to see on the recreational side of things.
This was thanks to an open mic event on Friday, 13 October, another first for the tournament.
The rugby and netball matches were played at D’Almeida Stadium, and soccer at the Extension 23 sports grounds.
In total, 32 soccer teams participated. All the teams are affiliated with the Mossel Bay Local Football Association (MOLFA). The winners were:
1st: Thembu Royals FC
2nd: Sea Birds FC
3rd: Young Stars FC
4th: Benfica FC
Mossel Bay mayor Alderman Dirk Kotzé attended the finals on Sunday, 15 October.
He commended the organisers and the Department of Rural Development, who serve in the municipality’s directorate of
Community Services, for their hard work and the superb event.
“It warms my heart to see the participation of our young people in this tournament. We take pride in hosting events and delivering services that can be seen as a tangible expression of the Council’s strategic focal points within the GROW strategy, in this case, growing social regeneration through sport,” said Alderman Kotzé.
The Mayoral Cup is hosted specifically to provide a platform to showcase the talent of rural sportsmen and -women.
