MEC highlights W Cape community safety successes

-

Western Cape MEC for Police Oversight and Community Safety, Reagen Allen, shared valuable insights with Mossel Bay Municipality senior marketing and communication officer, Cornelle Carstens, regarding community safety successes in the Western Cape during a visit to Mossel Bay on Tuesday, 21 November.

A video was made of the interview.

Allen was here for the longawaited official launch of the municipal K9 Unit.

It is based at the SPCA premises in Bill Jeffery Avenue and consists of four Belgian Malinois dogs, trained in sniffing out narcotics, ammunition and endangered species.

They are also trained in personal protection.

“This is indeed a celebration for the residents of Mossel Bay, who can be truly proud of their municipality,” Allen said. The dog unit was established by the Western Cape Provincial Government in partnership with the municipality.

“This is an important step in a continuous effort to combat crime and to enhance safety, not only in the municipal area, but along the Garden Route and in the Western Cape,” he continued. Allen said the Western Cape government’s roll-out of K9 units, including the Swartland and Overstrand Municipalities interrupted the flow of illegal goods and helped in the confiscation of illegal goods. It also assisted in the arrest and conviction of perpetrators.

“Establishing K9 units fits into the Western Cape government Safety Plan, which seeks to halve the murder rate by 2029 and ensure the Western Cape is the safest province in the country. As they say, a dog is man’s best friend, but we want these dog units to be a criminal’s worst enemy.”
