Vehicles donated to boost safety of the community

-

On Monday, 18 December, the Western Cape MEC for Mobility, Ricardo Mackenzie, met the executive mayor of Mossel Bay, Alderman Dirk Kotzé, and the municipal portfolio chairman for Community Safety, Councillor Leon van Dyk, for the official handover of two vehicles which the Western Cape Government donated to Mossel Bay Municipality’s Community Safety Directorate.

The vehicles will be used to boost the capacity of Mossel Bay Municipality’s Traffic and Local Law Enforcement, with monitoring for drunk driving, enforcement of municipal traffic by-laws and where necessary, offering a vehicle for the transport of members of the K9 Unit.

“We thank Minister Mackenzie, as well as the premier of the Western Cape

Government, Alan Winde, and his entire cabinet who amended the policy on vehicles that would ordinarily go out on tender and instead, in the case of Mossel Bay Municipality, donated two vehicles which we can use to boost our Community Safety

capacity. This then included the review, taken to the Provincial Parliament for ratification. This is all at no cost to our residents," said Kotzé

Speaking at the handover, Mackenzie said: “This is part of our road safety strategy in the Western Cape. Our ultimate goal is to get everyone home safely, and these two vehicles will assist in managing and looking after our roads.”

Van Dyk elaborated on the K9 unit and the original budget allowance for this three-year project and the valuable role the supply of resources, especially the two vehicles, will play.

"I also want to acknowledge and thank Councillor Leon van Dyk, who dedicates blood, sweat and tears every day to ensuring residents receive the best in community safety.

"He ensures tourists and matrics enjoying festivals in our town can always do so safely," Kotzé said. "This donation will assist us in promoting the broader public safety initiatives of the Western Cape Government as we continue to collaborate with them."
