Sudden passing of two Kenani men a shock

- Linda Sparg

Residents and staff of Kenani Service Centre, a senior citizens' complex in Mossel Bay, are mourning two male residents of the complex who passed away during the holiday period.

Henry Hans Pienaar (85) died on 27 December of a heart attack in Mossel Bay's Provincial Hospital. He had been admitted to the hospital the day before.

He married Sonja Brenda Steyn (65), also a Kenani resident, on 1 December at Kenani, only 26 days before he passed away.

There was great excitement and joy at Kenani over the couple's wedding and those who knew the couple contributed generously to the celebration to make it special. Mossel Bay Advertiser published an article on the wedding which included a touching statement from Kenani on how the couple's friendship had blossomed into a romance. Ben Viljoen

On Christmas Day, Kenani resident Ben Viljoen (66) died in the sea off Klein Brak.

NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said Viljoen had been swimming with a friend, who described to the NSRI how she had managed to swim him to the beach, even though he was lifeless in the water. It appears they had been caught in rip currents. The friend recounted to the NSRI how they found themselves in a wave set. While still in the water Viljoen showed no signs of life and she was able to get him to shore, where they were helped out of the water.

The NSRI lifeguards determined that Viljoen had no pulse and was not breathing. The lifeguards, assisted by bystanders, initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) efforts and they were joined on the scene by paramedics.

After all efforts to resuscitate Viljoen were exhausted, he was declared deceased by paramedics.
