- Kristy Kolberg

In a display of determination and skill, the Fish Eagles Masters Swimming (Fems) team made waves at the 39th edition of the Masters National Swimming Championships.

With a modest squad of 20, the team exceeded expectations, emerging as one of the standout teams in the competition.

In the blistering heat at St Stithians College Aquatic Centre in Sandton, Johannesburg, Fems collected a whopping 54 medals across various categories including individual events, relays, and open water swims.

The gala was held over four days from 13 to 16 March, with the open water 1km and 3km events at Prime View Recreation Resort on the final afternoon.

Despite stiff competition from larger clubs representing Gauteng, Cape Town and KZN, the Fish Eagles secured a commendable 6th place based on actual points scored, and an impressive 4th position on handicap. This achievement underscores the team's exceptional talent and dedication.

While every member of the team contributed to their success, special recognition goes to stand-out performers Attie Louw and Jenny Sheehy, who each clinched six medals with their prowess across multiple disciplines.

Additionally, newcomers Shay McDonald with one gold and two bronze medals, and Jed van Roon-Gifford with three golds and one silver medal, made an immediate impact, signalling a promising future for the club.

"The success of the Fish Eagles reflects not only individual excellence but also the camaraderie and spirit that binds the team together," said an extremely proud club chairperson, Cheryl Griffiths. "We are excited about the enthusiasm in this special group and are looking forward to developing the growth of the sport in our region."
