Meeting to take place after unrest

- Linzetta Calitz

A section of the N2 highway at Powertown, outside Mossel Bay, in the direction of Mossel Bay, was closed for a few hours on Wednesday evening due to public unrest.

Service delivery issues are said to be the cause of the unrest.

According to the Great Brak Police Station commander, Captain Francois Henzen, the unrest started at about 17:30.

Mossel Bay Municipality issued a warning on its Facebook page alerting motorists about the road closure.

The warning read as follows: "Provincial and municipal traffic, as well as the South African Police Service are at the scene in Powertown, Klein Brak River, where public unrest is taking place. Tyres are being burnt on a section of the N2. Motorists are cautioned. Eastbound lanes are open to traffic from Mossel Bay to George. Both lanes westbound, George to

Mossel Bay are closed. Traffic is being diverted on to the R102 at the Klein Brak interchange."

The municipality confirmed the road had been reopened at 22:00.

On Thursday morning, Mossel Bay Municipality noted (as in its notices on its Facebook page on Wednesday) that relevant municipal law enforcement and police representatives were on the scene.

It said councillor Anton Dellemijn, portfolio chairman vir Infrastructure Services, who is on the mayoral committee and lives near Powertown, spoke to members of the community on Wednesday evening.

"A follow-up meeting between members of the Powertown community and the executive management of the municipality has been called by the office of the municipal manager."

The meeting was set to take place on Thursday afternoon. At the time of going to press, the result of the meeting was not yet known.
