Tennis player wins gold after years of work

- Linda Sparg

A Park Primary School learner won gold at a holiday tennis clinic and mini tournament held in Mossel Bay during the Easter school holiday.

Every school holiday, local tennis coach Katie Müller holds this clinic and mini tournament.

This year there were tennis players from Mossel Bay and surrounds, from Oudtshoorn and from the Cape at the clinic. Children holidaying in Mossel Bay take part.

Nevaeh Fransman, in Grade 7 at Park Primary, won gold.

A Cape Town boy, Christiaan Fourie, won the boys' section of the competition.

The tennis clinic and competition took place on 25 and 26 March at the Mossel Bay Tennis Club courts at Harry Giddey Park in the town centre.

Müller and her two daughters, Margaretha Swanepoel and Katie van Niekerk, are all South African Tennis Association (SATA) Level 4 professional coaches. Müller's daughters assist her with coaching each time the clinic and competition are held.

Three to 16 years

Children aged three to 16 years take part.

The clinic and contest will take place again in June, September and then January next year.

They usually take place on a Monday and Tuesday because adults use the tennis courts on a Wednesday.

Müller usually coaches Nevaeh every Monday.

She is the number three player in Park Primary School's girls' first tennis team. Müller said Nevaeh had reaped the reward of her hard work. "She has tried for many years to win gold." She said the clinic was "a lot like the Boland practice camps. They hit a lot of balls."

The children play in a singles and doubles mini tournament. Müller said the experience helped the children take their tennis "to a higher level".
