Oudtshoorn vehicle stolen at airport

- KRISTY KOLBERG

A pharmacist from Oudtshoorn had a rude awakening when he arrived back from holiday on Sunday 9 July, only to find his vehicle had been stolen from the parking area at George Airport.

Like so many people before, Louwrens Theron and his family went on holiday leaving their car at the airport. On their return a week later, their silver Ford Ranger 3,2-litre 4x4 with registration number CG28660 was gone.

According to him, the CCTV footage shows two men tampering with the vehicle on late Sunday afternoon, 2 July.

The suspects were startled and ran off (it is not clear from the footage what or who startled them), but returned later the same night and took the vehicle.

“The footage shows the suspects driving over the pavement of the parking area. I really think airport security should be improved. Apparently this is the second vehicle theft in a short time,” a very concerned Theron said.

Senzeni Ndebele from Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) told the George Herald they are aware that in the past couple of weeks two vehicles have been stolen from the airport.

“We are currently busy working with our security company, Reshebile Security, as well as the police to ascertain what exactly happened. After that we will assess what measures we need to take to ensure that these incidents do not happen again in the future.

George Airport regrets the incident and apologies for any inconvenience that has been caused to our customers.”

In the meantime they will be working on a long term solution to increase security patrols in the parking area.

“These two incidents are the first of its kind to ever happen at the airport. We take this seriously and will endeavour to do everything in our power to ensure that vehicles are safe at the airport.”
