It looks amazing, it sounds amazing and it’s fully compatible with the Beoplay ecosystem. That means surround sound is only dependent on how many Beoplay speakers you have. The mere fact that you’re interested in a B&O TV unit already suggests that you have at least one. The stand is sold separately, which is a bit cheeky for an R80 000 unit. You can cast music to the speakers, though. And switch up your style with different grille designs.

Hisense ULED

Another technology in its third generation, Hisense’s ULED panels carry 99 per cent of the same features as Samsung’s SUHD; only omitting the glare-dissipating scales. The real strength here is the hard-to-beat price. You can pick one up for just shy of R20 000. It’s a bargain that even comes in a flat panel variant. Downside is that Hisense isn’t great at remote controls or user interface, and this remote is a horror show. But you’ll get used to it for the minimum R5 000 saving.

Samsung SUHD

Just when you thought Led-lit LCD panels (known simply and confusingly as LED) have reached a technological ceiling, Samsung proves us wrong. Quantum dot technology (for more colours), backlight zoning (for even brightness), HDR 1 000 (for better details) and scales to diffuse glare and improve contrast are just a few of the key features on hand. The magic is in the HDMI ports automatically recognising input devices and setting up the remote for full control, though.

LG OLED

Our chosen champion display panel technology is in its third generation and still sets the benchmark for contrast and colour vibrance. LG’S Magic Remote and overall UI are showing their age and are well eclipsed by competitors, but it’s still quite intuitive if this is your first smart TV. If you’re a gamer, you can’t get much better than this. Best-in- class refresh rates will keep pace with the most powerful machines.
