NISSAN NP200 ICE

COOL CUSTOMER

-

It’s hard not to have to take a few deep gulps when confronted with the prospect of spending well north of R200 000 to land a half-tonner. Admittedly, this version of South Africa’s bestselling half-ton pick-up is loaded with toys, cosmetic enhancements and creature comforts that significantly crank up the desirability index – at least compared with workhorse bakkies. But still… customer profile will include those of us with, say, a surfing lifestyle, or those who run a small business. Or business owners who surf a bit on the side. In short, unless you are in the habit of throwing money around, this is the kind of vehicle you’d buy for yourself, not as the office runabout or pool car.

The 8-valve 1,6-litre petrol four- cylinder (there’s a turbodiesel alternative) engine of our metallic blue test car was surprisingly intrusive at start-up, though it did quieten down when warmed up. On the move, though the gearshift is a little rubbery, the little Nissan gets going eagerly and lugs with a will.

Unlike the NP200’S 1400 Bakkie ancestor, there’s decent room in the cabin. The driving position works for some and not others, though. And there are presumably good reasons for picking the ICE’S particular basket of features, but remote central locking would have been nice (yes, , I know it’s a two-door. But still… ).

If the leather upholstery verges on overkill, to set your mind at ease the rubber mats limit the hassle of post-surf clean-ups.

Your money also gets you other practical stuff like 15-inch alloy wheels, two airbags, tinted windows, nudge bar, cabin protectorctorcum-lashing point, tonneau cover and Bluetooth sound system. And less practical stuff like body decals, but you can’t put a price on style.

Assuming the ICE fulfils a multiple role as personal transport and a sometime business tool, you’ll be glad to know that there are some safety items that deserve a specific thumbs-up. Dual airbags, ABS brakes and unique-to-the-ice factory-fitted daytime running lights are all included.

There’s no real competition for the Nissan NP200 Ice and its features package make it an attractive option at the price. It scores well on practicality, thanks to a generous loadbox that’s rubberised, plus extra storage space inside. Plenty of anchor points are provided in the loadbox, too.

Plus, for many there will be something comforting in the knowledge that you’re driving a locally built product.
