VW GOLF
Updated for 2017, the benchmark hatchback heads onward and upward in terms of technology – and price. The starting price is nudging dangerously close to R300 000, but that’s possibly of academic interest given that most Golf buyers apparently head straight past the plain vanilla versions to the GTI, at R545 800. Still, we’re eager to get some extended hands-on time with the new 1,0-litre three- cylinder entry level version. Which, by the way, makes the same power as the original GTI: 81 kw.
Combined with a 6-speed manual transmission, it’s said to sip 4,8 litres per 100 kilometres. At the other extreme, the GTI now produces 169 kw although it, like all Golfs at launch, features economy-minded Bluemotion Technologies such as a stopstart system and regenerative braking.
Among the design modifications to the range are new bumpers and front wings, new lights featuring LEDS, new wheel designs, new body colours and refreshed interior trim. The host of driver assistance technologies includes Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert as well as Adaptive Cruise Control with Front Assist and Atonomous Emergency Braking System. Optionally available across the range, and ordered in conjunction with the swivelling towbar, is Trailer Assist, which includes Park Assist. And, for the first time in the compact class, there’s gesture control for the infotainment system. Price: from R289 900.
