10 MOST SHOCKING STATS

-

CAPE TOWN: South Africa’s crime statistics for the period between April 1, 2014 and March 31, 2015 were announced to Parliament on Tuesday (yesterday), in an overload of numbers and percentages read out by national police commissioner General Riah Phiyega. We’ve picked out the 10 most shocking statistics.

17 805 people were murdered in the past year. That’s nearly 49 a day – up 4.6% from the previous year.

In KZN alone, 55 people were murdered on Christmas Day and 54 on New Year’s Day.

Young people committed a disturbing 800 crimes in the past year, with 49 murders committed by children under 17 years old.

South Africa is no longer just a pit stop on the international drug trade highway – it is a significant manufacturer and consumer of drugs.

In the past year, 86 police officers were murdered and 1 537 were attacked. The Western Cape was the most dangerous place in which to be a police officer.

Hundreds of police officers were moonlighting as criminals themselves.

The crime that people fear most is house-breaking.

South Africans are armed to the teeth.

A whole lot of cash slipped through the cracks of the law.

And most terrifying of all is the possibility that the murder tally does not even account for all the bodies in Gauteng mortuaries.
