Images of Currie’s action
THE PHOTOGRAPHS on display are a record of some of the sports and political events that have taken place at Currie’s Fountain sports ground since its formal establishment in 1924.
These moments, captured over two decades by photographers Dr Ranjith Kally and Rafique Mayet from the 1970s to the early 1990s, reflect the sports and political mood of an era when Currie’s Fountain had become the arena for political rallies and for the struggle of non-racialism in sport. Images of the banned Frelimo Rally were contributed by Vino Reddy and photographed by the police.
The Research Of Currie’s and Surrounds (ROCS) project at the Durban University of Technology, which has produced exhibitions and publications made possible by the support of the National Lotteries Distribution Trust Fund, donated the collection of photographs to the Currie’s Fountain Sports Development Centre in June.
The images were originally acquired for an exhibition, staged by the ROCS project during the 2010 World Cup, dedicated to the memories of the place affectionately known as “Currie’s”.
It is fitting that these images are now displayed where they belong and it is hoped that this display will be the start and catalyst for other donations of photographs and memorabilia that will assist in building up a collection of artefacts that will one day be housed in a museum dedicated to the history of Curries and the surrounding precinct.
