A movie that represents SA culture

-

MADUSHAN Singh, 26, who acted in White Gold, speaks about his role as Prishen Naidoo who falls in love with the girl next door.

Q: Is acting a full-time profession?

A: No. I am a contract manager.

Q: Describe your character in a nutshell.

A: I play Prishen Naidoo. He’s a final-year medical student, he’s shy, sensitive and very intelligent. He also has a huge heart towards his neighbours and falls in love with the girl next door.

Q: Some other movies you have acted in?

A: I’ve acted in White Gold, The Ledger, and Rights of Passage.

Q: What did you enjoy the most about filming this movie?

A: First, the phenomenal cast that was put together; we developed as a family on set. I remember the wonderful ladies making cups of tea for me during takes.

We had some amazing crew members who kept us going when our energy was dropping.

Also having worked with Mishqah Parthiephal and our director Jayan Moodley before, our synergy was stronger and we enjoyed the process of breathing life into our characters.

Q: What, in your view, is the most pertinent issues addressed in the movie?

A: I’d like to think one of the main themes in the movie was unity. Creating a bond with the people around you, a bond that transcends wealth and social status.

I think the love and unity we can share with people needed to be highlighted.

Q: Without giving away too much, what was the most fun scene in the movie and why?

A: It was actually mid shoot and there’s this beautiful dance sequence that Mishqah and myself get to perform and it was a lot of fun because we’ve done something that probably has not been in South African cinema so it really is a special treat for the audience.

Q: Why should everyone watch the movie?

A: Keeping up with the Kandasamys is for me an anthem of family, friendship, love and unity.

It represents everything we hold dear in our South African culture.

People will laugh, they will cry and they will walk out the cinema wanting to reconnect with family and friends.
