Hijacked man loses leg

- CHARLENE SOMDUTH

HIJACKED and shot five times!

That’s the horror ordeal of Effingham man Oliver Nair, who has the added trauma of a leg having to be amputated.

The incident took place near Chris Hani (North Coast) Road on Friday afternoon as the 34-yearold father of one, a car salesman, was driving home from work.

According to his sister, Thiloshne Nair, three armed men attacked her brother in his Toyota Corolla.

“The men shot him once in the leg and jumped into the vehicle. They instructed my brother to drive to Bester, near KwaMashu. During the journey, I am uncertain what happened but he sustained four other gunshot wounds – in all two shots to his left leg and three to his right leg.”

She said the attackers dumped her brother in Bester and fled with his vehicle.

“Oliver passed out, and when he came to, another man saw him lying on the ground and assisted him. Oliver remembered our father’s cellphone number and contacted him for help.”

Speaking of the call, his father, Tony Nair, said he would never forget the pain in his son’s voice. “All he said was, ‘Dad I have been hijacked and shot. I am in Bester’. I said to him, ‘I am coming son, hold on.’ A few minutes later he called to say he was in Redhill.

“The man who assisted Oliver drove to the area and waited with him until I arrived.

“All I could see, was my son covered in blood. He was unable to walk and I had to carry him into the car. I was in total shock. I rushed him to a nearby hospital but because he did not have medical aid he was turned away. A kind doctor helped get him transferred to a government facility via a private ambulance provider.”

Nair said that on Saturday, they received the devastating news that Oliver’s right leg had to be amputated because the injury was so severe. He said Oliver was doing well, and they were keeping a brave face for their granddaughter and daughter-in-law. Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane confirmed the incident.
