‘1999’ rewards musos

- LLOYD GOVINDSAMY

LOCAL talent never ceases to amaze and a group of young friends who recently released a music video are becoming quite the rage on social media.

Singer and songwriter Lincoln Soobramoney, creative director Senthuran Pillay and video editor Bongile August invested many hours working on the music video 1999 and their efforts have reaped rewards.

It has notched up 4 500 views on YouTube and the number is steadily rising.

Soobramoney, 27, formerly of Phoenix, said this had motivated him, and his colleagues, to work on other projects.

“I am a home-grown boy who grew up running on the street, playing cricket and soccer with the other kids. While other children wanted to become doctors and lawyers, I was the black sheep in the classroom and wanted to be a singer and a performer,” said Soobramoney, who relocated to Johannesburg and works at a call centre.

He said the idea for the song dawned on him when he arrived home from work late one night.

Instead of getting some shut eye, he stayed up and felt inspired to write a song dedicated to hard workers to remind them that they still needed to relax and enjoy life.

Pillay, 26, and August, 24, helped create the final product.

“We are working on a new music video, which we will be releasing soon.”

Pillay, a film director and co-founder of Tymphanic Vision Media, quit his job in the corporate field to pursue his dream of directing feature films and ventured into music videos.

“I appreciate talent and dedication and when I see it, I grow it. That’s why Lincoln and I worked so well together. From our very first interactions via YouTube to the tireless months invested on the track and video, everything has really proved that bravery, when combined with absolute stubbornness, can produce remarkable artwork.”

Pillay, of Centurion, said the music video was filmed at a local nightclub.

August, who has a diploma in film and television production techniques, said he met Pillay in 2012, while at varsity, and later joined the project.
