Get trim with Bollywood aerobics

- MARYANNE ISAAC

AFUSION of exercise and Bollywood met on the dancefloor as an energetic group of women breezed through their first day of Bollywood-inspired aerobics.

Bollywood aerobics is becoming a popular exercise trend in South Africa, blending Indian-style dance moves and aerobics, stimulating blood circulation and overall good health.

“Regular hours spent on dance aerobics aids increased stamina and weight loss,” said fitness instructor Fiona Pillay.

“This fun form of dance and exercise reduces stress while slowing down the ageing process,” she said.

Show promoter Pinky Mothie, the owner of the Star Academy School of Performing Arts, based in Avondale Road ,Greyville, who started the classes, said she enjoyed this form of exercise and it helped improve her health.

She is confident Bollywood aerobics can be used as a tool to create women empowerment and social cohesion.

Mothie explained that, while working on a movie project she noticed the lack of confidence in the women auditioning for roles.

“They appeared shy and introverted. That’s when I realised women needed an initiative that built empowerment and confidence, and that obesity was one of many factors that caused them to withdraw.

“I thought: why not dance? Ladies love bhangra, but can’t do the moves because they are too shy. That’s when I created this Bollywood dance aerobics to empower women.”

She said the dance classes were open to everyone, including men, and that they danced to popular English music as well.

First-time participants were left energised and longing for more dance sessions at the end of their class.

Sumantha Maharaj, a financial adviser, said: “I feel this dance form is a good way to release stress and toxins. It takes you away from reality. I am passionate about dance and I love dancing to bhangra music.”

Durban businesswoman Sheila Maharaj said: “I like it that culture comes alive in exercise and I need to shed my excess weight. This is a fun way to do it. I can also meet new friends. I am Hindi-speaking, so I love dancing to bhangra music.”

Teacher Shyma Nonam expressed her love for dance and music.

“I enjoy listening to Bollywood beats. I’ve always loved dancing. I enjoy dance moves that target the hips. This form of exercise makes me feel energised.”

Real estate agent Anjitha Maharaj added: “Dancing to Bollywood music while exercising makes me feel excited and exhilarated. I love doing squats, which work my lower muscles, and tummy dance moves.”
