Man shot dead in driveway

- CHARLENE SOMDUTH

A MARIANNHILL man who left a dinner date with relatives to fetch something from home was shot and killed in his driveway.

The devastated family of Gurunathan Moonsamy Cundasamy believe he was shot on Thursday night in a hijack.

The 36-year-old father of one was shot in the head, and his vehicle, a silver Jeep, was gone.

Sivalan Moonsamy Cundasamy said his son had left home with other relatives earlier that evening for dinner in Motala Heights, but returned at 10.30pm to fetch something.

“I was at home and heard the gunshot. I thought is was a firework. Seconds later a neighbour, who was walking by, saw my son’s body at the entrance of our driveway and screamed for me.”

Cundasamy found his son lying in a pool of blood.

“I have no idea how the hijacking happened. Neighbours, after hearing the gunshot, said they saw a white VW drive away.

“My son’s car was found the next day in an area in Mariannhill called Sunshine. I have lived in Mariannhill all my life and in recent years crime has got out of control,” Cundasamy said. His son’s funeral will take place today (Wednesday).

In a separate incident, Reservoir Hills resident Nithia Chetty was taken on a terror ride with three hijackers on Sunday night.

According to Nanadhan Arran from the emergency crime chat group EMS24, the armed men, in leather jackets, approached Chetty as he was retrieving medication from his vehicle, a Toyota Prado.

“They shoved Chetty into the rear seat, and bound his hands and legs. He was driven to Clermont where they withdrew an undisclosed amount of cash from his bank account.”

Chetty managed to escape. Police are investigating.
