Budding scientist back from US trip

- CHANELLE LUTCHMAN

“THE experience in itself held more value than any prize could have.”

So says Farah Shaik, the Durban teen who recently returned from Los Angeles where she had represented South Africa at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).

Farah, 16, who was among 10 other South Africans who attended the fair, told POST a day after she landed it was one of the most wonderful experiences of her life.

“There were people from over 70 countries participating and it truly amazed me to see how science brought so many people together.

“The calibre of the projects was high and I was impressed and in awe by the brilliant ideas. I enjoyed meeting such a diverse range of people from all around the globe. We were also fortunate enough to visit Hollywood, Universal Studios and Santa Monica beach,” she said.

Unfortunately, none of the South Africans won prizes, although this has not deterred Farah.

“I have been inspired and touched by so many wonderful people that I have met. This has proved to me that hard work can get you anywhere,” she said.

Farah said the seven judges had approached her about her project, on the application of photochromism to prevent skin cancer.

“I was delighted when they seemed impressed and enthusiastic about my project and I was extremely grateful for the advice given on how the project could be improved,” she said.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the public viewing day when I spoke to a number of people who were interested in my project and wanted to learn more about it.”

This expo has opened Farah’s options and she has decided to pursue a career in the health or sciences field as it would not only help others, but she would also be doing something that challenges her.

Farah wants others to consider entering the science expo because she believes the number of opportunities available are abundant.
