ONE thousand people took part in a yoga event in Zhenjiang in east China on Sunday in the run-up to the 3rd International Yoga Day.
The event was jointly organised by the Consulate General of India, Shanghai, along with the Zhenjiang Municipal People’s Government.
Zhenjiang, a city in Jiangsu province, became the third city in east China to host a grand curtain raiser ahead of the global yoga day.
“One thousand yoga lovers from all over Zhenjiang, including several Indian students from Jiangsu University, participated in the yoga celebrations,” said an official statement.
An Indian teacher conducted the yoga session for the practitioners.
THE Indian High Commission in Trinidad and Tobago has planned a host of activities prior to International Yoga Day on Sunday.
Addressing the media, High Commissioner Bishwadip Dey said yoga was over 6 000 years old and an invaluable part of Indian ancient tradition.
The activities, which will include school yoga awareness campaigns, will begin from this
week.
Dey said this year’s programme was organised by the High Commission of India with the United Nations, the Government of Trinidad
and Tobago, and the International Day of Yoga Committee.
“In essence, yoga is a process of creating a body and mind that are stepping stones, not hurdles to an exuberant and fulfilling life,” said Dey.
He added that yoga was essentially a path to liberation from all bondage.
“Medical research in recent years has uncovered many physical and mental benefits that yoga offers, corroborating the experiences of millions of practitioners.”
