Fun things to do for Father’s Day

CHANELLE LUTCHMAN shares ideas on how you could celebrate Father’s Day with your dad, some of which need not cost an arm and a leg

EXPLORE THE PORT NATAL MARITIME MUSEUM: For as little as R10 per adult and R5 a child, your family could visit the Port Natal Maritime Museum to explore ships and learn about maritime history.

The museum, near the Durban Esplanade, has panoramic views of the harbour and has ships that includes the 75-year-old Ulundi, the oldest ship on display, and the 38-yearold JR Moore, which worked as a tugboat in the harbour but could also go out to sea. The largest of the three, is a 42-year-old naval minesweeper, the SAS Durban.

The Britannia Exhibition Hall showcases everything you would need to know about the vessels, from the weather prediction to the communication equipment used to link ships at sea.

PICNIC AT THE PARK OR GO HIKING: Who doesn’t love a relaxing day in the park? Pack all of dad’s favourite dishes, grab a blanket, bat and ball and even a few friends and head for the nearest park.

You could also consider going to either the Mitchell Park or Paradise Valley.

Mitchell Park has a playground, a paraplegic playground, grass to laze on, a tea garden, and a zoo (cost R10 per person).

Alternatively, go hiking first through the Duiker Trail at Paradise Valley (cost R15 per person), before taking a breather on the lawns. A waterfall will also help you cool off.

Check out our recipe page for ideas on what you, or your mom, could prepare for dad to take along.

PROFESSIONAL BARBER: One of the best grooming gifts you could give dad is a trip to a professional barber.

It may cost a little extra but it will be worth his satisfaction. Book him in for a clean cut, shave and maybe even a head message (if offered).

TAKE A TRIP TO SHONGWENI: For R250 per person, hop on board the Holiday Express train on Friday and spend the day visiting the “CraftFest” at Shongweni Farmers Market.

Meet the craft makers at a festival of craft beers and enjoy some gourmet food, while listening to popular live music. For enquiries, log on to: theholidayexpress.co.za

USHAKA : Dads are invited to celebrate their day with the marine life at uShaka Marine World.

Adventurous dads can snorkel at the Sea Animal Encounters Island for R50 or get a free combo ticket into Sea World and Wet ’n Wild, if accompanied by a paying guest for the entire day.
