Man in court for wife’s murder

- CHARLENE SOMDUTH

DRESSED in a jacket and jeans Mohammed Nadeem Shaik Moideen appeared relaxed in the dock at Verulam Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

The unemployed 35-year-old father of two has been charged with murder after he allegedly stabbed his wife, Nadia Mia, 35, to death at their home in Lenham, Phoenix, on Saturday morning. They were cousins. Family and friends packed the public gallery.

Some breathed a sigh of relief while others were disappointed when Moideen was remanded in custody following his bail application.

While his family declined to comment Mia’s said they were speechless.

“I have no words to explain what happened to Nadia,” said her cousin, Mohamed Kalil Abbubakir. “I went into the house and viewed her body. It was gruesome. There was blood everywhere.”

He said there had been tension in the home the night before.

“Family were called to the home and they managed to get things under control.”

But the next day it was tense again, he said.

After hearing a commotion in the house, neighbours tried to get into the property but were unsuccessful, said Abbubakir.

“Their daughter screamed for help.”

Abbubakir said his cousin was covered in blood.

It is alleged that Moideen left the house in his brother’s car, driving to a canal in Merebank.

He was arrested later in Asherville.

Abbubakir described Nadia as a “gem”.

“Her father died when she was a baby and her mother died a few years ago. She did not have any siblings but she was a sister to me.”

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said the accused had been arrested at his mother’s house.
