Agony of slain son’s mother

- CHARLENE SOMDUTH

THE image of her son’s lifeless body will always be etched in Radha Chetty’s memory and although two suspects have been arrested for his murder she has vowed to do everything possible to ensure her son’s killers are brought to book.

Just over a week ago, Ugeshin Singh, 30, from Kharwastan, a contract worker for Engen, was found dead with 50 stab wounds to his body, outside a home in Croftdene. Just hours after the discovery of the body, two men aged 25 and 35 were arrested. They appeared in the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court.

When Chetty heard of her son’s death she was beside herself.

“When he was not doing work for Engen he sold DVDs around Chatsworth in order to supplement his income. Everyone knew him. Just before his death he told me he is going to sell the DVDs and will see me later but he never came back. Later that evening he called me to see if I was okay. When he did not return home I assumed he had been staying at his father’s home in Croftdene.”

The next morning, relatives and neighbours informed Chetty about her son’s death.

“I went to the scene. His face was covered in blood and dirt. I could not believe someone would do this to him. All I want is justice and I will stop at nothing to ensure his killers are brought to book.”

She said people were referring to him as a drug addict.

“I don’t know if he did drugs. He would go to work and come home. I did not have a problem with him. I don’t know if he did drugs but drugs is not a reason to rob a family of their son.”

Chetty described her son as humble, respectful and caring.

“People who visited our home could not stop speaking about his kind- hearted nature.”

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said a case of murder was being investigated.
