Man has created the idea of God

-

KEVIN Govender has chosen to walk with God but I have chosen not to. (Why I have chosen to walk with God, POST, August 16-20).

From a young age I began questioning the existence of God. Some dismissed it as the immaturity, ignorance and stupidity of youth and in time it would pass.

But here I am in my old age as unshakable as ever as a non-believer.

In fact, as I grow older, I am more and more convinced that God is the biggest hoax yet played on mankind.

And it has worked like magic. Despite all the scientific evidence disputing God’s existence, billions continue to prostate themselves before Him, accepting Him as the creator and the supreme ruler in heaven and on Earth.

Or should I say they fall at the feet of religious leaders who manipulate the masses to grow rich and fat? Religion is not about God, but money. Just look at all the churches mushrooming in Chatsworth.

It’s the easiest way to make money. And not pay tax.

Man hates uncertainty. The biggest mystery is the creation of the Earth, the stars and life. The ancients had no scientific explanation for this. So the story of creation was born, each human race with its own version.

The Bible tells us that heaven and Earth were created in six days. Perhaps it’s Christianity’s version of the Big Bang theory.

But now we know that the cosmos is a vast place beyond human comprehension and still expanding.

There are billions of galaxies, each with tens of billions of stars.

We also know the Earth is not the only living planet in the universe. The law of probability suggests that we cannot be the only intelligent life in the universe.

If that is so, who created this extra-terrestrial life? What then happens to the story of creation that God created man in his image?

Are there other gods in the universe as the Greek and Romans believed and Hindus still do? If life is found in outer space it will debunk the Bible’s story of creation as the gospel truth.

Throughout the ages man has faced numerous disasters, calamities, pestilence and wars. Though we pray every day to the Almighty for divine intervention, our pleas go largely unanswered.

Far from being a kind, loving benevolent God, He is indifferent, ruthless and merciless. He even strikes us dead while we pray. Where was God when 19 churchgoers were killed in a horror crash in Pietermaritzburg?

How could He intervene if He exists only in our minds?

God did not create man; we created God. T MARKANDAN
