Rungan launches new album

- CHANELLE LUTCHMAN

DURBAN-BORN jazz singer and songwriter, Natalie Rungan, is set to launch her latest album, One Heart, from Friday until Sunday in various parts of the city.

This will be the fifth album for the independent recording artist, which will feature jazz and gospel music.

“Each song is an expression of my personal experience and revelation of text from the Bible, adapted from teachings by my pastor, Apostle Mervyn Jean Louis.

“This has become the signature formula for my song writing, following the trend of hymn writers of old. I called the album One Heart in reference to John 4:23, which says: ‘The true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him’.”

Rungan praised the musicians who helped on the album.

“With Brent Quinton on guitars, Jezreel Sardinne on keyboards, Clinton Pillay on bass and my husband Bruce Baker on drums, the album brought hearts together in worship.

“It was my desire to find musicians who would not only play the music brilliantly, but would worship together, bringing life to the songs. I could not have asked for more than this bunch.”

Rungan said it took about eight months to write all 11 songs.

“When I have the idea, the songs seem to flow easily,” she said.

“For this album and the previous one, I draw ideas from texts in the Bible based on sermons by my pastor. I rarely had blank moments, but if an idea did not flow to the end, I just went back to it later on.”

She will perform songs, including Perfect Love, One Heart and Your Grace, at the Vineyard Community Church in Arena Park, Chatsworth, on Friday at 7pm, at the Firm Foundation Ministers in Stonebridge, Phoenix, on Saturday, at 6pm, and at the NCF North on Old Main Road in KwaDukuza (Stanger) on Sunday at 6pm.
