Pinky’s legendary concert coming up

- CHARLENE SOMDUTH

MOTHIE Productions has been a household name within the Indian entertainment industry since the 1960s.

Now, decades later, under the banner Big M Productions, they are celebrating their 50th anniversary with a Legends concert.

In 1967, the late D Mothie hosted his first Eastern Band and Sari Queen contest at the Orient Hall in Durban that featured the country’s best bands and singers.

“This show started it all,” said Mothie’s wife and veteran show promoter Pinky.

“Hundreds of people were turned away because we were packed to capacity,” she recalled.

“Back then we did not have much to keep us entertained. Eastern shows and contests, therefore, became popular. It was filled with glitz and glamour,” she said.

She said they started hosting about three shows a year at the Durban City Hall and, as the years progressed, these events were held throughout the country.

However, in 2000 the family was dealt a devastating blow with D Mothie’s passing.

“I knew he would never want us to stop performing and creating shows, so I strive to keep the standard and professionalism of our productions high and, with this 50th anniversary celebration, I am keeping my husband’s legacy alive.”

With the assistance of their son, Rajiv, who was four when his dad died, they have put together the commemorative event that will feature singer Ramesh Hassan, the Afrofusion Crew and SA Star Academy.

A host of yesteryear legends will be honoured for their contribution and keeping their culture alive through music and song.

They include Hassan, Tansen Nepaul, Mona Maharaj and Fatima and Omar.

The show will take place at the Liberty Hall in Durban North on Saturday at 7pm.
