INSPIRING MATRIC SUCCESS STORIES:

- NADIA KHAN

WHILE some youngsters are drawn to certain study fields because of the wealth and fame it can bring, Chatsworth matric star Taryn Jennifer Louw wants to become a doctor because of the medical adversities she experienced throughout her life.

The 18-year-old, who wants to specialise in oncology, chose her future career when she was just five.

Her dad died when she was young and her mom, Caroline, became the family’s breadwinner.

“When I was nine, my mom had a stroke and later suffered two heart attacks and had to undergo triple bypass surgery. Also, my grandmother died from cancer a few years ago and all this made me more determined to help those who are sick,” she said. “Becoming a doctor is my mission. I cannot look at someone suffering.”

The Newhaven Secondary School matriculant bagged 9 As and has been accepted to study medicine at the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine.

She should be on her way to achieving her dreams, but a lack of funding could prove to be an obstacle.

“My mother is not in a financial position to fund my studies. I have applied to many businesses and organisations for a bursary and have received R25 000 from the Aaron Beare Foundation. However, I will still need funds for the balance and for textbooks. I am hopeful and know God will provide.”

Taryn is hoping she will qualify for fee-free tertiary education for poor and working-class students, a new government plan announced by President Jacob Zuma last month.

“It was a huge relief when I got my results, mainly because I had not applied at any other university despite being advised to do so. I had my heart set on UKZN,” said Taryn. “Thankfully, I attained the marks I needed.”

She enjoys reading and listening to music, and was part of an Interact Club at her school, an initiative driven by the Rotary Club of Chatsworth, for which she did volunteer work.
