IF YOU’RE looking for a quick, nourishing and savoury hot snack, your best bet is a samoosa or two.

Its popularity came to the fore recently when POST hosted its first Samoosa Challenge at the Durban Exhibition Centre in three categories: best filling, folding and fastest eater.

The winners were Salma Agjee, Roxana Naseem and Ebrahim Bux, respective­ly.

The fourth category was the samoosa story, the deadline of which was last Wednesday. For this, readers needed to submit their best and funniest samoosa experience­s.

The winner was Kalay Moodley, of Rydalvale, Phoenix, also known as the “samoosa aunty”.

Among her fans are her husband, Richey, who enjoys her tin fish samoosas, and sons, Megan and Keegan, who prefer the three cheese made with mozzarella, Gouda and feta.

She said her husband’s niece, Kerenza, who resides in East London, coined the name “samoosa aunty”.

Moodley, who teaches at Port Shepstone Secondary School, is able to fill and fold around 500 samoosas in an hour.

She won cooking hampers courtesy of Spice Emporium and JVS as well as a two-night stay for two, with breakfast, at Sibaya Lodge.

Below is her winning story:

I USED to wonder what was the right way to fold a samoosa and I always thought that being left handed was the reason why I couldn’t get it right.

And to add insult to injury, a friend embarrasse­d me while filling samoosas by making a statement like “now that’s a bad samoosa filling”.

Then came an opportunit­y where the owner of Kupcake Heaven needed me to fill samoosas for her during her fasting month and would pay me to fill 500 samoosas at one go. I mastered the technique and lovingly earned the title “samoosa aunty” from family and friends.

I’m often called by friends and family to fill samoosas even though teaching is my profession. But for me, the joy comes from making samoosas for my hubby.

Should there be a Liverpool match that was on TV, I would in half an hour flat, make him his favourite tin fish samoosas and surprise him. He would be overjoyed.

My recent visit to Australia had me filling samoosas for my bestie using phyllo pastry and believe me, it was just as divine. The Aussies were in awe of my talent. I guess that’s a legacy I leave behind – “samoosa aunty”.
