Foray into uncharted waters

- JANINE MOODLEY

WITH seven distinctions to his name, Kaamil-Inaam Naicker, 16, of Northwood High School, grabbed a place in KZN’s Top 10.

He was placed seventh. Kaamil-Inaam has been topping the list from junior level, advancing to Grade 2 at the age of 6.

He will now head for the University of Pretoria to study chemical engineering. The future engineer received a bursary as part of the Vice-Chancellors Discretionary Merit Award from the institution.

Kaamil-Inaam was also accepted at UCT, Wits, Stellenbosch University and the University of the Free State.

He said his only fear about moving to Pretoria was having to do his own chores.

“I’ve never washed my own clothes nor cooked for myself. So this will be delving into waters unknown.

“But I’m looking forward to a different environment, to changing some lives.”

Passionate about reducing his carbon footprint, he hopes to either venture into food production or the development of natural hair products.

“I’m keeping my options open, but whatever I decide to specialise in will have to be environmentally friendly.”

His advice to the Class of 2018 is to be willing to sacrifice time and put in the hours needed to make it through.

“Matric has been designed for you to pass. Everything is readily available.

“You just got to be willing to put in the time and effort. It’s all about sacrifice. There’s nothing you can’t do if you work hard.”

He said another tip was to go over previous exam papers.

“This will do you a world of good. That’s why I am in the process of creating a website with all past years’ papers at one source.”
