Smashing volleyball

- SPORT REPORTER

THE inaugural National Volleyball League (NVL) for indoor and beach teams starts this weekend at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Westville Campus and Durban’s New Beach.

The NVL is a spin-off of Volleyball South Africa being declared “Federation of the Year” last year. The announcement was made in Parliament by Sports Minister Thulas Nxesi.

Sport and Recreation South Africa has formally earmarked R10 million over a three-year period to host the league games over four weekends in March.

The prize money for the event is R200 000. The official opening will be staged at UKZN’s Sports Centre on Friday at 5pm.

The keynote address will be delivered by the sports minister.

The participating teams are Rhinos (KZN), Thunderbolts (Gauteng), Mapungubwe Warriors (Limpopo), Western Cranes (Western Cape), FS Giants (Free State), EC Eagles (Eastern Cape), NW Dynamites (North West), MP Buffaloes (Mpumalanga) and Diamond Kudus (Northern Cape)

Meanwhile the league confirmed several internationally accredited courses for prospective coaches in April, August and October.

The courses, recognised by the governing body, International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), will each run for 30-35 days online with five days of practical work.

The federation will provide online support and course material and an instructor will conduct the practical course in South Africa.

Participants who pass the online coaches course will receive a FIVB digital certificate. Volleyball South Africa will provide a hard copy certificate to each successful candidate upon completion of the practical course.

The practical aspects for the beach volleyball course, and level one and level two coaching courses, will be held from April 12-16, August 3-7 and October 6-10 respectively.
