Edge-of-seat thriller lights up big screen

ACE Kollywood director Bala is at it again, doing what he does best; that is, offering the discerning film-goer the best in movie magic. Bala opted for an urban setting rather than a ruralbased screenplay and does not disappoint. He introduces newcomer Ivana to join music director-cum-actor GV Prakash and Jyothika to light up the cinematic screen. Naachiyaar is an edge-of-the-seat thriller neatly packaged into a movie that runs for just over one-anda-half hours, which is quite unusual for an Indian movie.

The story revolves around GV Prakash, a free-spirited youngster who is wanted by the police for raping a young girl played convincingly by Ivana.

Bring into the mix Jyothika, a no-nonsense police officer, who is on a mission to bring the perpetrator to book.

Naachiyaar takes off at high speed and the pace is relentless as Bala weaves this interesting story into a vivid tapestry. The viewer is left quite breathless and virtually on the edge of the seat towards the climax of the movie. Will she or won’t she? Who is the father of the baby? These are the questions that will plague your mind as the story of Naachiyaar unravels.

GV Prakash should bag a national award for his role in Naachiyaar. This young, good-looking actor is completely transformed into a raw and dishevelled character, who plays the role of Kaathu very convincingly. Ivana has proven without a doubt that she will be given many more opportunities to showcase her talent in Kollywood.

But Jyothika steals the show. She plays the titular role to perfection. Her body language as a strict police officer is portrayed quite convincingly. Even her father-in-law, yesteryear actor Siva Kumar, was quite complimentary of his actress daughterin-law. He suggested that his son, dashing Kollywood hero Suriya, should not stifle the acting talent of Jyothika but to give her the freedom to act in as many movies as possible.

However, please be warned that the climax of the movie shows a harrowing scene (but done tastefully) where Jyothika cuts at something bloody… it is left to the imagination of the viewer! Iliayaraja’s background score complements Naachiyaar into a watchable movie.

Naachiyar is showing at CineCentre Suncoast.
