Graduating in style
SUNGLASSES. Check. Sexy blue dress. Check. Graduation gown. Check. Now strike a pose…
Using the graduation stage as a catwalk, UKZN BA honours media and cultural studies cum laude graduate Chrysantha Alicia Palan caught most people off guard as she strutted, showcasing model-like poses.
The video of the 22-year-old Durban North resident went viral with more than 250000 “likes” in two days.
“It has been a crazy week. I have had people calling and texting me, and I have had over 1000 new Facebook friend requests. However, many people don’t know that what they saw is actually me. I have always been bubbly, energetic and hyped about life every day,” said Palan.
The Durban Girls’ High School matriculant said although she had planed to wear her sunglasses on stage, her inner fiery persona “popped out” when she heard her friends cheering her on.
“As I walked on stage with my glasses, I could hear the crowd cheer and clap. I believe you should never pretend to be someone you are not, and I am definitely no introvert.
“Many people have said it was inappropriate on social media. I beg to differ. If I did not have a thick skin I would probably have been upset, but the truth is I worked really hard to achieve my degree.
“It took long days and even longer nights, missing out on socialising with friends and important family events, but at the end, I have proved that I am capable of working hard.”
She added: “Anyway, UKZN chancellor, Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng, was smiling and was clearly amused. So if he was happy, I am happy.”
Palan, who received a scholarship to complete her master’s degree, is working on a “sound” research proposal for her thesis.
“Once I have completed my masters, the job hunt begins. I am hoping to secure a position in fashion editing for a magazine, but there are so many future prospects and I don’t believe in limiting myself. Right now, I am looking forward to a bright and exciting future, filled with more catwalk moments.”
