Tolerance essential in spiritual world
THE article “Hinduism without ethics obsolete” (POST, April 2-6) with particular reference to Kavady refers:
Dr Thillayvel Naidoo’s “holier than thou” position and posturing regarding Kavady and worship of Lord Muruga is ill-conceived and insensitive as well as denigratory, disingenuous and dangerous.
The essence of Godliness and instilling God consciousness from which ethics, morals and values rise are certainly manifest in Kavady and Muruga worship.
Willy-nilly pontification or pronouncements on practices perceived to “no longer have relevance” only sow the seeds of doubt and confusion and can have a debilitating impact on the belief system of sincere devotees. The efficacy of the sacred Kavady ceremony can be amply attested to by millions of Muraga worshippers worldwide.
The power of prayer is infinite and beyond the limitations of human comprehension. If performing Kavady or any other ritual helps a devotee feel good, with a sense of fulfilment as well as true inner peace and bliss and inner spiritual strength, then it should be encouraged as it deepens faith and enhances God consciousness.
God answers everyone’s prayers one day in His own way. While Hindus should not tolerate intolerance, it is essential to respect rituals of others regardless of personal preferences.
Religion is a highly emotive issue. Mode of worship is a personal matter. While I believe that Hindus should be more spiritualistic than ritualistic, the reality is that some human beings are spiritually more evolved that others.
Perceptions and practices will therefore differ. Hinduism promotes freedom in thinking about God.
God is not the exclusive property or preserve of any person or group of persons or religion. God loves all his children. Everyone has equal access to God – the One, Living, Loving Lord of All.
In the Holy Gita, Lord Krishna explains: “The same I am to all beings.”
He further declares: “Howsoever do people worship Me, even so do I accept them, for the paths that people take from all sides – lead unto Me.”
