A principled ethos

- VELISA NAICKER Chatsworth

BATHO Pele principles are invaluable to our daily life. Their profound positive impact on our lives is reflected in the way we behave, not only in the workplace but socially as well. Courtesy and consultation have proved to be the most essential thus far.

Workplace courtesy, in a survey conducted by the Sunday Express (O’Grady, 2017) on work etiquette reflected that 71% of those surveyed wish co-workers would pay more attention to the niceties of etiquette in the workplace. We must not ignore our fellow co-workers, instead acknowledge them whenever we can.

It’s amazing to see what a difference a greeting can make to someone’s day.

Choose to hold the door for them, you would be pleasantly surprised by how grateful someone can be for such a simple act of kindness.

In this instance, a little courtesy goes a long way in the workplace.

Social consultation, the author Mike Johnson (Johnson, 2004) outlined “The 3 Cs of effective communication are: clear, concise and consistent.”

It’s imperative to listen and understand the needs of our families and friends. This will assist us in meeting their expectations.

Most often conflict arises from poor communication. Be open and transparent in all aspects of your life. Choose your attitude wisely and communicate effectively.

Batho Pele principles are not just a set of standards but are words to live by, that teach us to treat each other with humility and respect.

Remember the words of the great soul Mahatma Gandhi: “You must be the change you want to see in the world.”
