Don’t tarry; it’s ‘Harry & the Gupta’
JACK Devnarain and Vikash Mathura are two giants of the entertainment industry.
Despite being friends for 30 years and sharing a mutual admiration for each other’s work, they have never collaborated on stage. But that is about to change.
They will star together in the stage production Harry & the Gupta at several venues around the country from this month.
Devnarain, a renowned television and film actor, has been entertaining audiences for 25 years. During this time, Mathura has been celebrated as one of the highest profiled radio and theatre personalities in the country. Their fans are thrilled that these two legends are now going to be seen together for the first time on stage in the hysterical new comedy tour.
Mathura reprises his role as “Harry”, a brash Durban entrepreneur who has become a favourite among theatre patrons, while Devnarain plays the suave and infamous businessman “Rajesh Gupta”, a character that has not exactly endeared himself to the South African public.
The show is set in the mythical Saxonwold Shebeen, where the story begins with Harry (Durban’s “Con of Cons”) meeting the Gupta (Joburg’s “Don of Dons”) for the first time. The interaction between Harry and Rajesh Gupta, who are from opposite ends of society, makes for rib-tickling comedy. The famous uncles “Peru & Bala” also make a special appearance in the production.
Harry & the Gupta will be playing to audiences in a national tour of at least 30 shows. The tour opens at Gold Reef City’s Lyric Theatre on July 21 before heading to Durban’s Sibaya Casino on July 27 and 28. Then they’re off to the Ridge Casino in Witbank on August 3 and the Lenasia’s Patidar Hall the following day.
They will also perform at Port Shepstone’s Marburg School Hall on August 18 and Port Elizabeth’s Boardwalk Casino on August 25.
The tour will run until December. Tickets are available from Computicket.
