Reflecting on rich history
THE country’s oldest non-racial golf club, Durban Golf Club, recently hosted the President’s Cup tournament and a launch event to commemorate its 90th anniversary and is gearing for further festivities.
Club coach and mentor Babs Govender said the event, played at the Papwa Sewgolum Golf Course, was aimed at paying homage to their indentured Indian forebears who “laid the foundation with blood, sweat and tears”.
“Our forefathers should be remembered during this celebration as they are responsible for the existence of the club. Their hard work, passion and commitment took the club to a level where it positions itself today. An area to be admired with considerable thought, was the notable thorough administration coupled with careful financial discipline,” said Govender.
He added that the club would next host another tournament and banquet celebration on November 17, to commemorate the arrival of Indians to South Africa on November 16, 1860.
“The tournament will be a high level event with top prizes up for grabs, while the banquet will include dignitaries and, of course, a dinner and dance. We will also produce a 60-page souvenir brochure reflecting the club’s rich history.”
Speaking on youth development, he said they had a junior development programme in which the equipment was sponsored during the free training sessions.
“We are hoping to produce the next Papwa Sewgolum.” For enquiries, call Babs Govender on 083 656 2061.
