Let’s go for a Sari Stroll

- CHANELLE LUTCHMAN

THE 9th annual Durban Beach Sari Stroll was such a success that the city has pledged to work with the event organisers to grow the walk, which is aimed at promoting social cohesion.

The head of parks, recreation and culture, Thembinkosi Ngcobo, said: “I will bring at least 200 people next year. I realised through this stroll that this organisation is encouraging people to respect others culture and heritage and this event is not disappointing. Your city is going to be part of this event, so you guys can grow from strength to strength. What you are doing is not about a sari but resilience of spirit.”

The Golden Mile was filled with a sea of colour on Sunday as hundreds of women – of all ages, shapes and races – participated in the stroll that highlighted the sari and the importance of diversity.

The sari stroll, started by friends Natalie Lange and Kamlesh Gounden in 2010, has become popular on the Durban social scene.

While the drums echoed, the women and a few men also adorned in saris, chatted, sang and danced en-route.

Debbie Mcmahon, who walked with her friend Rosh Boodhoo, said: “It’s my first walk. We do the park run each week, and when Rosh told me about the stroll, I said I would accompany her. I love the concept of promoting the sari and social cohesion. Rosh is Indian, and through this walk, we know we have the same heart and the same purpose in life.”

Vimmi Sewlall said the stroll was relaxing, while Elizabeth Banda of Malawi and her employer Sharitah Makka said they were having fun.

“This year, I got to wear a sari, and I feel like I am part of the Indian community,” said Banda.

Fellow stroller, David Abrahams, who was decked in a sari, added: “I joined my wife last year and decided to show my support again. I have been brought up to respect each and every religion and culture, and that’s what I am doing here.”

Event co-ordinator Kamlesh Gounden said: “The event was a resounding success. We are getting messages and calls from women who cannot wait for next year.”
